A Woman at the Post Office

How one letter to God sparked a quiet wave of kindness—and changed a heart. At a small-town post office, there was a woman whose job was to sort the mail with no clear address. Most of the time, these letters were scribbled messes or vague notes that ended up in the “lost and forgotten” pile. But one day, she came across something different.

It was addressed simply:
“To God.”

Curious, she opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter:

“Dear God,
I’m an 85-year-old widow living on a small pension. Someone stole my purse with $120 in it—all I had until my next check.
I’ve invited some friends over for Christmas dinner, but now I can’t buy food.
You’re my only hope.
Please help me.
Sincerely,
Martha

The woman at the post office felt a lump in her throat. She shared the letter with her coworkers, reading it aloud. The room grew quiet.

Then someone reached into their wallet.
“I can spare $5,” one said.
“Here’s $10,” another offered.
Before long, they had collected $116—nearly the full amount Martha had lost. They placed it in an envelope, sealed it without a return address, and mailed it off.

That day, their hearts were a little lighter. They smiled, imagining Martha’s surprise. It felt like the kind of Christmas magic people always talk about.

A Week Later…
Another letter arrived.

“Dear God,
Thank you. Because of Your gift, I had a wonderful dinner with my friends.
P.S. There was $4 missing. I bet those thieves at the post office took it.”

At first, there was silence.
Then someone snorted. Laughter filled the room.

“Well, that’s gratitude for you!” someone said with a grin.

But the woman who first opened the letter couldn’t stop thinking about Martha. Was she really that mistrusting? Or had life just worn her down?

So she paid Martha a visit.

On her day off, she found the address and knocked on the door of a modest apartment. A frail woman with watchful eyes opened it.

“Can I help you?” she asked, clutching her shawl.

“I’m from the post office,” the woman smiled. “I just wanted to see how your Christmas went.”

Martha hesitated, then waved her in.
“Come in, then. But if you’re selling something, I’m not buying.”

Over tea, they talked.

Martha eventually opened up. She shared stories of a small bakery she once ran with her late husband—how they gave away bread to anyone who was hungry.
“And then,” she said bitterly, “we were robbed. Cleaned out. We had to shut down. He passed a year later.”

She looked down at her tea. “After that, I stopped believing people were good. People take what they can.”

The woman nodded. “I’m so sorry. That’s a hard thing to carry. But… maybe someone was trying to help this time.”

“God helped me,” Martha replied. “People don’t give without a reason.”

The woman smiled but said nothing. She didn’t tell Martha the truth. Instead, she left with a gentle goodbye.

Back at the post office, she told her coworkers what happened. They laughed again at the missing $4—but something had shifted. One worker leaned forward.

“Maybe she just needs to believe in people again.”

That’s when they had an idea.

Over the next few months, they started sending anonymous gifts.
Fresh flowers.
A box of cookies.
A soft, cozy blanket.
No names. Just quiet kindness.

Each time, Martha wrote another letter to God. Each time, her words grew a little warmer, a little softer.

Then one day, the final letter came:

“Dear God,
I don’t know why You keep blessing me. I thought the world had given up on kindness, but You keep proving me wrong.
Maybe I was just looking in the wrong places.
Maybe kindness is quieter than I thought.

Sincerely,
Martha

The workers didn’t need to sign their names.
They had already given her something far greater than $120.
They gave her a reason to believe again.

🌟 Moral of the Story

Sometimes, life can make us lose faith in people. But kindness doesn’t need credit—it just needs to be shared. And when we give without expecting anything in return, we don’t just help others… we help heal hearts.

Share this story if you believe kindness still matters. ❤️
