Joe DiMeo, a New Jersey native, has opened up about his extraordinary journey of survival and recovery after a devastating car accident left him in a coma — and what he says he experienced during that time has moved many.
At just 18 years old in July 2018, Joe fell asleep at the wheel while driving home from a night shift. His car flipped and caught fire, leaving him with third-degree burns covering 80% of his body. The accident led to the loss of his fingertips, as well as severe facial injuries.
As he later learned, modifications made to his car played a role in the fire. When the engine split and sparks met leaking fuel, the result was a terrifying blaze.
Now 26, Joe has undergone more than 20 surgeries — including, in 2020, becoming the first person in the world to receive a successful face and double hand transplant.
“What I Saw Felt Real”
During his three-month coma after the crash, Joe says he had vivid, often painful dreams. In an interview with People, he described a surreal but peaceful moment that stood out — walking with his beloved dog who had passed away in 2012.
“I’m assuming this is the afterlife,” Joe said. “Just me walking my dog on an endless hill.”
While most of his coma was filled with dreams connected to the physical pain of his treatments, that quiet memory stayed with him.
Finding Purpose Through Pain
Joe has since chosen to share his story to help others facing dark or uncertain times.
“I realized, you know what? Let me be real — actually real, real,” he shared. “Putting my story out there to motivate people… Didn’t realize my story can actually save lives.”
Despite everything he’s endured, Joe says he’s found meaning in his new life — and even love.
“It sucks, I got into an accident, I lost 80 percent of my skin, and I have someone else’s face and hands on me,” he admitted. “But then I also found my life partner… I would prefer not to be burned, but I like my life now, just because I have Jessica around.”
