Popular Shampoo Recalled After Dangerous Bacteria Found That Could Be Fatal to Some Users

A well-known shampoo brand, Tec Italy, is recalling over 1,000 bottles of its “dry and damaged hair” shampoo due to the presence of a harmful bacteria that could pose serious health risks.

Henkel, the company behind Tec Italy, voluntarily issued the recall after a test revealed the presence of Klebsiella oxytoca, a bacteria that naturally exists in the mouth, nose, and intestines. While the bacteria is usually harmless in the digestive system, if it spreads to other parts of the body, like the bloodstream, it can cause life-threatening infections. In rare cases, it can kill up to 10% of infected individuals.

The recall affects 1,068 shampoo units with the lot code 1G27542266 and an expiration date of May 27, 2027. These products were sold primarily to salons, though they may also have been available in retail stores like Walmart, Target, and Amazon. While no illnesses have been reported so far, the potential risks are serious.

Klebsiella oxytoca infections are rare but can lead to symptoms like fever, chills, shortness of breath, and cough. In severe cases, especially in people with weakened immune systems, it can lead to pneumonia, sepsis, or other life-threatening complications. The bacteria typically affects around 100 people in the U.S. each year, and the fatality rate is estimated to be between 10-20%.

The recall follows a similar issue earlier this year when another Tec Italy product, Tonico Shampoo, was pulled from the shelves due to possible E. coli contamination.

If you have purchased Tec Italy Shampoo with the affected lot code, it’s recommended that you stop using it immediately. While the FDA has not provided specific disposal instructions, it’s important to handle the product carefully and follow any local guidelines for safe disposal.
