Gary Sinise Shares Heartbreaking News After Losing His Son to Rare Cancer

Beloved actor and humanitarian Gary Sinise has spoken publicly for the first time about the devastating loss of his son, Mac Sinise, who passed away in January 2024 at just 33 years old.

A Family’s Double Battle with Cancer

In a deeply emotional statement shared on the Gary Sinise Foundation website, the Forrest Gump star revealed that Mac had been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer called chordoma in 2019—just two months after Gary’s wife, Moira, was diagnosed with stage-three breast cancer.

While Moira went on to beat her cancer, Mac’s battle was tragically different.

“He died on January 5, 2024, at 3:25 p.m.,” Sinise wrote. “Like any family experiencing such a loss, we are heartbroken and have been managing as best we can. I am so blessed, fortunate, and proud to be his dad.”

A Father’s Unshakable Devotion

In a recent interview with People magazine, Gary described the rare cancer as looking “like a monster grabbing my son’s spine.” Despite undergoing surgery, Mac was among the unfortunate few whose cancer returned.

Gary, known not only for his acting but for his tireless work supporting veterans, decided to step away from Hollywood in 2020 to focus entirely on helping his son fight.

“That’s when I stopped acting,” he said. “I put everything I had into trying to find a miracle for Mac.”

He tried to shoulder as much of the burden as he could — to protect his son from fear and pain.

“A few times I felt like I couldn’t do enough, or I didn’t know what to do. Then you say a little prayer, get back up, and go back into the fight.”

Mac’s Final Days

As Mac’s condition worsened, Gary clung to hope.

“You could see tumors on his body. You knew the drugs weren’t working. But I wasn’t thinking we were going to lose him.”

Despite everything, Mac stayed strong and didn’t want to let go.

“He kept wanting to stay,” Gary said. “But I know Mac was at peace at the end. He dealt with it with grace and courage.”

Life After Loss

Now, Gary is focusing on what matters most — his family. He’s not rushing back into acting, and says his priorities have shifted.

“Since losing Mac, I hold my daughters a lot tighter. You think about the things that are really important.”
