High-Profile Investigations

Kash Patel, a former government official, recently raised concerns about how the FBI managed its investigations during the 2016 election cycle. Speaking in a televised interview, Patel claimed that former FBI Director James Comey made independent decisions about which cases to pursue, bypassing normal Department of Justice procedures.

Patel pointed specifically to the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server during her time as Secretary of State. He noted that Comey publicly announced the FBI’s findings in a 2016 press conference but ultimately concluded that “no reasonable prosecutor” would bring charges. That announcement, and a later reopening of the investigation just days before the presidential election, drew widespread attention and controversy.

According to Patel, key information about that investigation may have been withheld or presented in a way that misrepresented the bureau’s internal findings. He also referenced Comey’s handling of national security protocols and suggested that important documents from that time were not stored according to standard procedures.

Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino echoed some of Patel’s concerns in a separate interview. Bongino stated that materials from Comey’s tenure were recently discovered in a previously unused room. He described ongoing efforts to review and declassify certain documents, but emphasized that some materials are under the jurisdiction of other agencies and cannot be released without coordination.

While the exact contents of the newly found materials have not been disclosed, Bongino said their existence has prompted internal review and raised questions about prior oversight within the FBI.
